How is the CIO and the role of IT perceived

The value and role of the Information Technology functions have come under fire recently. CIO.com has done an excellent job bringing visibility to the issues.

Some key issues raised in this discussion include:

    Is IT a commodity or a key differentiator?(CIO May 1, 04)

    • Clearly the answer is YES!
    • Some aspects of the internal operations like network, file and print services, email are all commodity infrastructure capabilities.
    • The TRUE valuable CIO will improve access to information in ways that make the business more agile, actionable and responsive.

    How can IT deliver on its value?

    • Provide a vision of what can happen - IT management must see ways to make a difference and communicate that vision. Areas of improvement might save money/time, they might improve relationsihps with customers or vendors, or they might support more effective management. Find out what the senior leadership needs to accomplish and work magic.
    • Work with management to implement business improvements that meet corporate objectives
    • Remember IT is both a foundation and a springboard for improvement - be more than a commodity...
